Paul Grilley's Yin Yoga DVD has literally opened up new things in my yoga practice. I've been practicing yoga for about ten years now, and recently in my practice I've been encountering new resistance. There are some postures where I just seem "stuck" and I'm not making any progress. After incorporating more yin into my yoga practice, I am noticing shifts in the range of motion in my body, which is spectacular and surprising!
My experience in yoga and in teacher training has always harped on "protect your joints!" I am naturally inclined to be hypermobile in my joints so I have always worked extra hard engaging my muscles and making modifications to support my joints. Now Paul Grilley says that it is okay and even beneficial to stretch them? YES!
Yin Yoga exercises the connective tissue in the body by gently creating traction in the joints and holding poses for several minutes at a time.
There are 2 DVDs in this set. The first is a lecture defending the benefits of yin practice. The second contains three hour-long yin practices, three yang sequences, and additional yin openings and closings. It's a wealth of material! Even if you don't watch the lecture, Paul Grilley explains the benefits of each pose and general yin yoga philosophy throughout the practices. Yin poses rely on muscles relaxing and on gravity to create ease in the pose, which makes this an excellent practice for beginners, but it also is a very different way of experiencing poses than a "yang" practice (like vinyasa, for example) and advanced practitioners will likely have a new perspective on basic postures.
I know I'm gushing but I think this is a great DVD to add to your collection. Your body will feel amazing after some yin!
