“I had a yoga teacher once, who would always say, "There, do you feel THAT?!" when we were right at the edge of a challenging pose. It's difficult to explain THAT. It's the place right at the peak of your physical strength and concentration, where there is a shining moment of peace and one-ness with the universe, and it feels like the earth and air are lifting you up. Those are the moments I live for in my yoga practice. It's why I teach, so that I can bring students to those moments, too.”
Flissy is a 2008 graduate of the Teacher Training Program of the Yoga Center of Columbia, where she studied intensely under certified Anusara teachers. She has practiced yoga since 2001, when she began attending yoga classes to get some exercise and alleviate the stresses of college life. Since 2008, she has been teaching yoga to group classes and private students, with a message that yoga enhances physical and spiritual well-being. The physical practice compliments dietary and fitness plans for holistic wellness, and the practice of mindfulness and meditation brings a sense of calmness to busy students.
Key elements she emphasizes in class are maintaining optimum alignment as a way to enhance the yoga practice and bringing an optimistic attitude and sense of joy to the mat. Students recovering from injury or have other physical concerns appreciate Flissy's careful integration of alignment principles that are fundamental to Anusara and Iyengar traditions. Flissy encourages constant attention to moving with the breath for students who enjoy a physically energizing practice, and grounds every class with a foundation in yogic philosophy and the restorative benefits of meditation.
In addition to her extensive yoga experience, Flissy has over five years experience in ballroom dance, over three years experience in belly dance and is certified in American Tribal Style General Skills. She performs in Baltimore-based tribal improv troupe, Kallisti Tribal. She also performs as as one half of the contemporary fusion duo, Verve Tribal. She views yoga as essential cross-training to her dance career not only to keep her body dancing safely for many years, but also to develop an alert and peaceful attitude that allows her to communicate more fully with her dance partners and shine in performance.
